Excerpt

Hunter centered his chin over the cue stick and concentrated on his aim. The game- winning ball sat just in front of his face, waiting to be dropped into the pocket. He studied it, imagining where the cue ball would need to hit in order to make his shot. Stick level, he took a few warm-up strokes.

Perfect. This wager is as good as won—

"Dogfight!"

Fuck! A perfectly aimed shot gone to hell.

Disgusted, he threw down his cue stick and made his way toward the bar where two men were arguing over a spilled beer. As he got closer the hackles rose on the back of his neck. Only midnight and a fight brewing already?

One of the two wolves spotted him approaching and nudged the other. They both stood and moved off toward the exit, taking their argument outside.

Good enough. Why ruin the night by turning a simple beef into a real brawl? If the men were smart enough to settle things between themselves, Hunter wouldn't get involved.

The Wolf Den always drew a rough crowd on Saturday night. Rafe, the pack Alpha, encouraged the males to visit the bar, enticing them with drugs and alcohol.

A lone wolf is a frustrated wolf and frustrated wolves cause trouble.

Hunter wished he had a nickel for every time he heard Rafe utter those words. He'd be a rich man. He didn't always agree with their pack leader but he gave him the respect he deserved, and kept his mouth shut.

Their Alpha believed every wolf needed a mate. And if he didn't have a mate, then he needed a fuck buddy. With so few women available, the club had become a place where unmated Lycans could find a sex partner. Relationships had been forged in the Den, but for the most part the club remained a haven for one-night stands.

The shifters, full of randy animal spirits, behaved as well as could be expected. Dogs fight. It's the nature of the beast. Anything could trigger it — a bump in passing, jealousy over one man's attention to another, or jockeying for dominance in the pack.

Prevention was always the best policy. Two or three pack enforcers, strategically stationed around the bar, usually managed to maintain a testosterone-friendly atmosphere, their mere presence a reminder that the Lycans were being scrutinized.

But tonight the air seemed super-charged with tension. Utilizing extra enforcers had been a good call.

Hunter took one of the vacated seats at the bar and the bartender slid a bottle of mineral water in front of him. Tyler winked as he leaned over and rested his elbows on the bar. He smiled at Hunter seductively. "What are you doing later, sweetheart?"

Heat traveled up his spine. Maybe he was crazy to turn down a sexy wolf like Tyler. He knew the bartender didn't have a regular partner, preferring serial flings to monogamy. Relieving his sexual frustration with a man like Tyler wouldn't be a hardship. Coward. Are you going to hide behind your grief forever?

When he was just a pup, a few inexperienced encounters had convinced him he preferred males. Then Rafe had paired him with a female mate and he'd put those urges to bed. He could have taken lovers on the side, but he'd chosen to remain faithful. He hadn't been with a man in twenty years. Hell, he wouldn't know what to do with him. Tyler would laugh him out of bed. He reached for the bottle. "I'm on overtime."

The bartender sighed regretfully. "You know what they say about all work and no play."

"No. What do they say?"

"That it sucks." Tyler took his hand and turned it over. "You're starting to grow hair on your palms." He rubbed a thumb over Hunter's palm.

Hunter pulled his hand away and looked at it. It wouldn't surprise him.

Tyler broke up laughing. "If you change your mind, you know where to find me."

Tyler's trim ass held his attention as he walked away. Shit! Hunter washed a few aspirin down with a healthy swallow of water and held the cold bottle against his head. His temples throbbed along with the hot, pulsing beat of the electronic dance music. Colored lights around the dance floor winked in the mirror over the bar, intensifying the pain in his head. He'd rather be on patrol outside any day of the week.

Excerpt:

They both looked up when they heard the back door open and watched as Gom snuck out. He had a sack in his hand and he was heading right for them. Brave little fart. He knew he was supposed to stay inside.

“Gom?”

“I’m sorry, Dill. But I saw the man and I wanted to see if he was hungry.” The tiny boy couldn’t seem to help the quick glances at Soldier. “I don’t think he would hurt us. He’s been real still by you. I was watching out for you. That’s my job now, right?”

Dillon shook his head and held out his hand for Gom to come closer. Gom came to stand right between Dillon’s legs, facing Soldier.

“Soldier, this is Gom. He’s been made my second in command at the house and he evidently takes his job seriously.” Dillon looked down and spoke quietly to Gom, smoothing his hand over the bony shoulders. “Gom, you don’t have to protect me. I just made you my special assistant to help me with the others. What do you have there?”

Gom was looking at Soldier with awe. He didn’t say anything.

“Gom?” Dillon prodded.

“Oh. Uh. Sir... Soldier, I mean... is that really your name? I brought you some of the stuff we had left. Do you eat? Why are you always out here? Are we in trouble? I won’t let you hurt Dill.” He leaned into Dillon. “Where are you from? Are you in the Army? Can I touch your face? Does it hurt? You must have hurt bad. You’re awful big. Are you hungry?”

***

Soldier had to smile. How could he answer all that? He couldn’t even remember all the questions. But the kid had showed spunk coming out here if he was worried about how big Soldier was and if he was going to hurt Dill. Dillon.

“I eat. Thanks.” He reached for the sack. Gom handed it to him and smiled, and Soldier’s heart did a little flutter thing. This little one was special. “So, you take care of Dillon... uh Dill, huh?” He tried to think of all Gom had asked. “Not in the Army anymore. I was. Yes, it hurt... real bad. I don’t usually let anybody touch me, at all, but... uh... you can if you want.”

“You let Dill. I won’t if you don’t want me to.” He started to shake a little as he went on, “I was probably being bad to ask you. It’s bad manners, huh?”

“It’s okay... Gom, is it?” Soldier wanted to ease him for some reason.

“Yeah. Gom or Gommy. I’m too little for Montgomery . I would like to touch you once, just for a little... to see how it feels. Are you sure I can?”

“Gom...” Dillon started to say, but Soldier broke in.

“It’s okay. Come here, little one. Here,” Soldier took Gom’s little hand and pressed the palm against the rough scars on his face. He moved it a little so the boy could feel how rough it was and then he dropped his hand and let the kid touch him.

Gom’s eyes were huge as he moved his hand over Soldier's face. He patted it softly and said, “Does it hurt when I touch it? I don’t want to hurt you.” There were tears gathering in his eyes and he dropped his hand.

“Here, what’s the matter... uh, Gom? It’s okay. It didn’t hurt me.” Oh, shit, what should he do now? He was so out of his element here. “I’m a tough guy anyway, but there’s very little feeling in that side of my face because of the scars. Don’t cry.” He felt awful as tears fell down the little boy’s face. The boy didn’t make a sound, though.

Dillon closed his arms around Gom and sat him down on his leg, saying, “Shhhhh, now, Gom. You heard what he said. You didn’t hurt him. Come on now, don’t cry or you’ll get all worked up. I hate when you cry for so long.” Dillon patted Gom on the back.

Soldier’s eyes widened. He was totally stunned when Gom said, through his tears, “But someone hurted him bad and it makes me sad.” He sniffed and rubbed his eyes. “I can’t help crying. I’m sorry. Don’t be mad.”

“Honey, you’ve got to quit thinking we’re gonna be mad when you cry. It never makes me mad. I just hate to see you sad enough to cry.” Dillon hugged him close. “Come on, now, dry up and tell Soldier it’s okay. I think he thinks he did something wrong.”

“Oh, no. You was nice and let me touch. I wish they didn’t hurt you, though.” Gom did the strangest thing then. He stepped away from Dill and went to stand between Soldier’s legs and put both arms up to Soldier’s shoulders and laid his little head on Soldier's chest.

Soldier was literally flabbergasted. He couldn’t move. He didn’t know what to do. He looked over at Dillon, who was smiling gently at Gom. Finally, he put a hand up and patted the kid on the back. Gom sighed and relaxed against Soldier. This was too weird.

Soldier looked down and saw that the kid had actually gone to sleep. He looked at Dillon, knowing that Dillon could see the surprise in his face. He handed the sack back to Dillon and gently picked Gom up and settled him against his shoulder like a baby. There was such a difference in size between them, it was almost like the little boy was a baby. Gom turned his face into Soldier’s neck and sighed again.

“Soldier?” Dillon whispered. “That is the first time Gom has ever touched another person as far as I know. He lets me touch him, he wants to cuddle with me even, but no one else ever even tries.” He shook his head, clearly not believing what he was seeing. He went on to explain, “He goes into the worst episodes. He cries and cries. It’s enough to break your heart. You must have something really special. He trusts you like he does me. Do you mind holding him?”

“No.”

“He gets so little sleep. I even let him sleep with me when he asks, hoping he'll sleep better.” Dillon's worry and fondness for the child was clear in his voice. “He doesn’t eat enough and I worry about him. I still don’t know all that happened to him.”

“You know any?” Soldier didn’t know if he could stand hearing about it if it was something really bad, but he felt compelled to ask. He started rubbing softly against the boy’s back and felt Gom relax deeper into him.

Undercover Assignment by AKM Miles

Undercover Assignment, AKM Miles, Featherweight Publishing, Young Adult listing
Blurb:

Gom Marsh liked knowing that the work he did as an undercover cop, enrolling into high schools to assist the staff in cases of extreme bullying, made a difference. It was rewarding, but often heartbreaking, work. When a new man, Casey Tanner, comes into his life, his heart is immediately engaged. Is he about to find the happiness he's always longed for? He's excited by the possibilities, but Casey doesn't like to be touched. That could be a problem. These two young men's lives become as intricately entwined as the cases that Gom finds himself involved in throughout the story.

Excerpt:

Gom answered Casey’s question, saying, “Yeah, man, Trick’s doing great. He’s going to school and the new start is helping. He’s safe here, Casey, thanks to you. Would you like to join us for supper, maybe see how well Trick has settled in here? We’d love to have you, huh, Soldier?” Gom turned to his dad, who was moving about the kitchen setting things out for one of their favorite meals. “It smells great in here. I love when you make tacos. There’s always plenty,” he said, looking back toward Casey, who looked like he was ready to book.

“Nah. I gotta go. Things to do, you know?” Casey started to leave.

“Casey,” Gom said, stepping closer and touching Casey’s arm near his shoulder, “please stay and eat with us. We’d love to have you. We never know who’s going to show up. It’s not really formal here and everyone’s welcome.”

Casey didn’t jerk away from Gom’s touch. It was more that he slid out from under it in a smooth gesture. “I don’t need anybody takin’ care of me. I just wanted to make sure Trick was doing better is all.” He seemed firm in his refusal. Just as he started to reach for the door, Trick came in from the hall and saw them.

“Casey, hey! Are you here for supper with us? Look, we’re having tacos. Soldier makes the best ones ever. I’m glad to see you.” Trick came over and in a surprising move, put his arms up and went to hug Casey, who stepped back quickly, leaving Trick with his arms up in an embarrassing gesture. The rejection showed clearly on Trick’s face and Gom was upset. That was the first time he’d ever seen Trick even act like he was going to hug someone and it had been instinctive.

“Sorry. I’m sorry,” Trick turned away. Gom was at a loss. He looked from an embarrassed and harried-looking Casey to a sad Trick to a pissed-off Soldier. Damn it! Casey’s gesture had probably set Trick back considerably. Being able to make a spontaneous move like Trick had came hard for the young man and it had been met with what Gom considered callous disregard, not something he found to be a good or caring thing, especially from a man that Gom was finding interesting. He was very disappointed.

Gom looked at Casey and tried not to let his feelings show as Soldier set about trying to get them all past the small scene that had taken a toll on Trick. Gom turned from Casey, afraid his face would show how disheartened he was by Casey’s move.

“Trick, help me chop the lettuce. I’ll do the onions. No crying in my kitchen, huh? Gom, you’re on dicing the tomatoes, and Casey, if you’re staying, you can get a bowl for the shredded cheese and open the black olives. Oh, and get out the sour cream and the guacamole. Let’s hop to, boys. This meat and the refried beans are almost ready. We’ve got tortillas, regular taco shells, and those bowl-shaped ones you like, Gom. They’re ready to come out of the oven, by the way. Here, Casey, take this and grab them before they burn.” Soldier handed Casey a potholder and pointed to the oven where there was a large tray of the bowl-shaped taco shells just getting brown.

Gom didn’t look to see if Casey did as requested. He got his tomatoes and started dicing. It took a lot. He was a little ticked at Casey for the way he’d hurt Trick. Would it have hurt him to accept the gesture from the younger boy, especially since it wasn’t something Trick did easily? Trick was seeing Tommy and making some headway in losing some of his isolationist behaviors and fears. Gom could see him really making an effort to fit in with the others at the place. There was no doubt in his mind that Soldier and Dillon, with Tommy and Daniel’s help, could help Trick become another success story. He kept working with his head down.

They had big bowls of each item that went into the delicious tacos. He heard the oven door open and out of the corner of his eye he saw Casey’s arm setting the shells and bowl-shaped tacos down on the trivets on the counter. He refused to smile at Soldier’s clever mind. Maybe Casey had realized what a mistake he’d made and the hurt he’d caused and was trying to make up for it, even though Gom knew he wouldn’t be comfortable working with them all in the kitchen. He got the impression that Casey didn’t play well with others.

Kevin's Alpha by Amber Kell

Release Date April 30th preorder here

Kevin Santhil opened his eyes, looked around the room and panicked.

“What the fuck?”

Then it all came back to him. Jaynell’s battle, his friend’s victory, and Kevin letting the wolf alpha, James, sweet-talk him into bed. Well one of those things wasn’t as bad as the others. Kevin was as bisexual as the next, well bisexual, but his stomach churned over how much he liked being in James’s bed. He’d never spent all night in anyone’s arms before. His deep-seated fear of commitment ensured he generally snuck long before his bedmate woke. Turning his head he examined the large man lying beside him. Most people looked younger, gentler, while asleep. James looked like he could snap awake and spring into action, taking down anyone who threatened his pack.

It was kinda hot.

Dangerously so.

Kevin worked too hard to get into wizarding college to throw it all away for a hot alpha wolf, no matter how much he longed to spend the rest of the day wallowing in the big wolf’s bed and licking the sexy man all over.

Glancing at the clock, Kevin bit back a curse.

If he didn’t get his ass moving he was going to be late for class. Sliding away from the warm, sensual man took a huge amount of willpower. It didn’t help when a large hairy arm grabbed him around the middle and snuggled him back to against the shifter’s body as if he belonged there.

“Where ya goin’?” A deep, sleep-roughened voice murmured in his ear. Sharp teeth nipped his lobe making his cock rise in interest. A moan broke from his throat as his body, operating on instinct, rubbed against the hard man behind him.

Damn, the big wolf woke ready for action.

“Let go,” Kevin gasped, half-heartedly trying to move the muscular arm pinning him easily in place. A difficult protest when his body yearned to stay in the snuggly cocoon of the big wolf’s arms, even as his mind knew class started in an hour.

He couldn’t miss class. As he father always said if you lack talent make up for it with persistence. Of course his father was an abusive asshole but he did occasionally dispense good advice. What Kevin lacked in pure magical power he made up with dedication. This morning he had Magical Theory and if he were even a minute late he’d probably miss the one essential fact in an hour of droning monologue.

“No, I’m going to keep you in my bed where you belong.” James’s warm breath slid across his skin leaving hot desire in its wake. The alpha’s hard body pressed against Kevin’s ass bringing back vivid memories of the night before. Memories his body remembered fondly and rose to show its appreciation. Stupid hormones didn’t care about Kevin’s schedule. They thought wallowing in bed all day was a fabulous idea.

He reluctantly broke away from the gorgeous alpha scooting quickly towards the edge of the bed and away from temptation. “I’ve gotta go. I have class in half an hour.” He still needed to take a shower unless he wanted to go to class smelling like cum. He lost track of how many times they had sex last night, but his entire body ached in places he didn’t even know could ache. Spending all day on a hard wooden school chair wouldn’t be comfortable, but definitely worth the price.

“You’ll come back.” James definitely didn’t lack confidence. Of course with those kinds of bedroom skills the man had reason. Kevin didn’t even know if he liked the big wolf as a person but the attraction was undeniable. He desperately needed to get away from the man before the alpha could convince him to throw it all away for a big cock and a possessive attitude. When the alpha lured him into bed last night he didn’t even think to protest. Strange, he wasn’t really the type who jumped into bed with just anyone.

“I’ll be back after school,” he lied.

Uh huh. Not going to happen.

James clamped his big hands on Kevin’s hips stopping his progress out of bed and sliding him back closer to the wolf. Pressing his nose against Kevin’s neck, he inhaled deeply. “Why do humans bother to lie to werekin? We can always tell.”

Enticing Elliott by Amber Kell

Enticing Elliott out April 23rd buy link

Elliott looked at the big metal door with the wolf head knocker and balked. There was no sign on the outside or even darkened windows to indicate this was a nightclub, just a big metal door. The entire lack of a line or roped off area made him extremely nervous. He almost ran.

Almost.

However, Anthony had asked him to come, ordered him really. He couldn’t say no to Anthony. He didn’t know anyone who could. There was something about the man that made you want to make him happy, want to do what he asked.

No matter how ridiculous.

Like wearing leather pants and a copper-colored mesh shirt. Hell, even the boots were an Anthony requirement. There was nothing so embarrassing as having your new boss take you shopping and then demand your attendance at a bar...club…whatever.

He wasn’t even sure it was legal for Anthony to do that. Of course he wouldn’t be the one bringing it up.

He’d met the man’s mate.

Tentatively he took the wolf knocker and banged it a few times.

Immediately, the door opened to a tall lean man with short black hair and massive shoulders. Cool grass-green eyes looked him up and down. “Yes?”

Nerves had Elliott shaking his head back and forth, more of a spasm than a voluntary movement. “Um, A-Anthony invited me.”

“Name?”

“Elliott Samuels.”

Those green eyes examined him intently. “Samuels?” He knew what the guy was implying, but he didn’t have a pack. He’d never had a pack.

“I’m half-wolf. No pack.” He wasn’t ashamed, no matter how piercing the other man’s gaze.

“Can you shift?”

Elliott didn’t know why it mattered, but he nodded. “Full independent change.”

Some half-wolves couldn’t. Couldn’t shift or involuntarily shifted under a full moon, their control not as good as their full wolf counterparts, but not Elliott. His wolf was a quiet submissive creature. It had to be coaxed out beneath the moon, but it could be coaxed.

“Excellent.” The man gave him a smile that could only be called…wolfish.

Elliott had the dizzying sensation he was the prey in this scenario and he wasn’t entire certain he disliked the idea.

The man pulled a phone from the clip on his low riding black jeans. Elliott blinked at how low those jeans really rode. He discretely turned his head so he couldn’t be caught staring inappropriately.

“I need a replacement.” The bouncer’s voice was low and pleasant, sliding through Elliott’s body like an aural aphrodisiac.

Damn he was fine. Elliott willed his body not to harden. His leather pants left nothing to the imagination. They might not ride as low as the hot bouncer’s jeans but they had a snug fit. If he became hard, the fact he wasn’t wearing underwear would be apparent to all. Damn Anthony, he convinced Elliott to do without his boxers saying it would give him unattractive lines.

He was reconsidering his current employment.

“Coming,” a scratchy female voice said over the speakerphone pulling Elliott’s attention back to the bouncer.

The gorgeous wolf hung up and pinned Elliott with those stunning green eyes.

“It will be just a moment.” He flashed a wicked smile. “Like what you see?”

Elliott swallowed. “Sorry, I-I didn’t mean to stare.” He could feel his cheeks burning with embarrassment, one of the problems with having pale skin. His mother always said he inherited his great-grandmother’s Irish complexion, but since the woman died before he was born he only had a few grainy photographs to support the theory.

The bouncer chuckled. “If I didn’t want people looking I wouldn’t wear them so low. I’m Parker.” He held out one massive paw to Elliott who cautiously took the other man’s hand. He was surprised at the handshake. The larger man was careful of his strength, apparently he wasn’t one of those men who felt more manly if he crushed everyone’s hand to prove he was stronger.

“I’m here.” A pretty woman who was even shorter than Elliott’s five-nine walked up the stairs. She took one look at Elliott and gave a wide smile. “I’m Shara, who are you?”

“This is Elliott,” Parker said, blocking Elliott with his larger frame before she could offer her hand. “Anthony invited him.”

“Hmm. And it takes a personal escort to take him to Anthony?” Her eyes were brilliant blue, sparkling with mischief.

“Just give me fifteen minutes,” Parker growled before turning back to Elliott. “Come with me.”

Elliott resisted any possible smartass response that involved coming and the hot black-haired man leading the way with his tight, round ass. That didn’t stop him from looking though.

Parker glanced back at the pretty auburn-haired wolf and bit back a growl. He searched his mind for the perfect present for Anthony. The man was going to get a big reward for bringing Parker his mate. Unless he intended Elliott for someone else, then they were going to have words.

Denying Dare by Amber Kell

Denying Dare comes out April 9th buy link

EXCERPT:

“So how long have you been in love with my best friend?”

Dare Moon dropped the bottle of alcohol he was twirling. Luckily the expensive top shelf vodka landed on the anti-fatigue mat. The spongy rubber prevented it from shattering on the cement floor.

“What are you talking about?” he gasped trying to still his pounding heart. “I’m going to tell Silver to cut back your alcohol limit.” There was no way he was going to admit any attraction. Not when the man he was interested in showed no sign of returning his affection.

Anthony gave a graceful shrug as he sipped his fruity alcoholic drink. “Silver’s not overly concerned about my alcohol limits. I don’t drink all that much.” He blinked his stunning amber eyes at Dare. “Now about Steven. If you’re not in love with him, why do you stare at him like you want to pounce and take him down like a squeaky mouse?”

Sighing, Dare gazed across the room where the dark-haired wolf trolled for someone to take home, someone not him. “Nothing’s going on with Steven and looking is as far as I’ll ever get. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want a cat.”

Fuck if that didn’t break his heart. He couldn’t change the fact he was a weretiger, even if he wanted to, any more than he could help pining for the handsome werewolf.

Anthony looked unimpressed by Dare’s heartache. “As much as I love him, Steven’s an idiot. In the past three months none of those pieces of ass he picked up touched a fraction of his heart. He’s only determined to have a wolf mate because his adopted parents are human and he wants to belong to a pack.”

Dare blinked back tears, dipping his head so the empathetic alpha mate wouldn’t notice. “I can’t give him a pack, weretigers only meet to mate.”

“Shit, Dare. I can give him a pack if he wants a pack. What he needs is a soul mate and it’s my job, or so Silver keeps telling me, to watch out for the packs’ best interests. Well the packs’ best interest is for its fabulous bartender to be happy.”

Small bolts of lightning flashed in the beautiful blond’s eyes; a sign of a storm of the worst sort, an Anthony storm. Shit. It took a lot to upset the sweet-natured alpha mate but he was an unstoppable force when crossed. Dare looked nervously at the wall of bottles. He hoped he wouldn’t have to explain Silver what happened to them.

Before he could say anything else Anthony slid off the bar stool and marched across the busy dance floor. With a talent, mystically the alpha mate’s, he walked directly to his friend while everyone in his path moved out of his way in a smooth natural style as if they were never even there.

Standing on his tiptoes Dare watched the smaller man approach his friend. He briefly got a glimpse of Anthony pulling something out of his pocket, but by then it was too late.

Devon's Revenge by Jade Archer

Devon’s Revenge – by Jade Archer

Coming April 11, 2011

Blurb :

Book two in the Portals Series

Devon never wanted to be free. He never wanted to leave the safety of the harem. Forced out of the only home he’s ever known, he’s cold, hungry and…angry for the first time in his life. Revenge needs to be very sweet.

Faced with an impossible choice, Devon threw away his only chance of returning to his Master and the sheltered life of a pleasure slave. Now, abandoned and abused, Devon is struggling to find his way alone in a strange new world—Earth. Being a stray certainly isn’t easy, and replacing his Master is proving almost impossible. Then he meets Nate.

Nate isn’t looking for a mate. He certainly didn’t expect to find him in a club about to go down on another man! But something about Devon calls to him like no one ever has before. Now if he can just make sure Devon isn’t the most dangerous kind of shifter—the kind that would do anything to return to their master—perhaps they can work on exploring the mutual attraction that’s simmering between them, ready to explode.

Unfortunately, there are more challenges still ahead for Devon. More for Nate and Devon to face than learning secrets and earning trust with a new mate. There are enemies moving in. Some they never knew existed, and some that still haunt Devon’s nightmares. And they’re ready and waiting to take any chance of a happily ever after away forever.

Reader Advisory: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series

Excerpt :

Devon continued to study his ragged shoes. The toes were so tattered that he could almost see his feet poking through. It was quite funny actually. Not so long ago he hadn’t worn any clothes at all and had never felt uneasy. Now he was self-conscious about the sorry state of his footwear.

With a self-deprecating snort, he dismissed the silly notion. He was cold and more tired than he could ever remember being in his life. Shoes really were the least of his worries.

Devon couldn’t stand the thought of another night out on the streets. He had already spent enough cold, lonely nights roaming around in his cat form through the city to last a lifetime.

While he was smaller and quicker on four legs, he found he wasn’t necessarily any safer. Many nights he had been screamed at, chased, and harassed.

Devon felt himself sway on his feet as he stood, but instantly Nate reached out to steady him. Devon risked a peek up at the much larger man. He didn’t look dangerous. Okay! He looked dangerous, but not mean. Could he trust the instincts that told him he would be safe with this man?

Devon sighed in resignation. Who was he kidding? Why should he start trusting his instincts now? This man was probably going to turn out to be just like everyone else and end up hurting him. Why couldn’t he just accept that was what he should expect from others and move on?

There was something wrong with him. He wasn’t sure what it was, but those around him seemed to sense it and react accordingly. There really was no point in fighting it. At least this way, if he went with Nate, he would have a dry place to sleep and only have to deal with one person instead of a whole city full. Perhaps he could even scrounge a meal or two before Nate turned on him, or got sick of him and he was forced to move on.

Timidly, Devon nodded his acceptance of Nate’s offer. He tensed when a large arm wrapped around him, then gradually settled in closer to the man’s warm side. It was an odd feeling, being held almost protectively like this, but not necessarily a bad feeling. In fact, he found he quite liked it. He wasn’t sure what the bigger man might want from him later, but he was willing to give whatever it took to get somewhere he could rest for a little while and maybe stay in the shelter of this warm body for just a bit longer.

Devon felt himself begin to drift. Already more asleep than awake as he let Nate lead him away.

Drifting is good, he decided. Everything felt a little fuzzy and dull, and he found he really wasn’t anywhere near as worried any more with Nate guiding him along and keeping him safe.

The pleasant feeling lasted about three minutes, before he realised Nate was leading them back to the club. Devon tensed. Was this some sort of game? Was Nate teasing him? Getting his hopes up, only to abandon him back at the club, or pass him off to someone else?

Devon’s heart thumped against his ribs and he wondered what chance he had of getting away from Nate.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Nate asked, squeezing Devon’s shoulders gently.

“We’re going back to the club?” Maybe he was wrong.

“That’s right.”

Devon’s breath caught in his throat. “I thought you were taking me somewhere I could sleep.”

“I am. I live above the club. Most of the ca…ah…The Cat Club staff do. I’ve got a spare room you can use.”

Devon’s footsteps faltered, but Nate simply adjusted to match and supported him while he got his balance back. “Really?”

Nate’s chuckle was warm and easy. “Sure thing. It’s only going to waste. You’re more than welcome to use it.”
