HARLEY’S HEART by Stormy Glenn

HARLEY’S HEART
Special Operations 4
After being rescued from ten months spent in hell, all Harlan Thomas wants to do is go home to the one man whose memory kept him alive. Trouble is, Miko is not where Harley left him.
Mitsuaki Thomas was heartbroken when his husband didn’t come home from a mission. He didn’t give up when the letters stopped or even when his mother-in-law had a funeral for Harley. But when he’s forced out of his home, Miko finally admits that maybe Harley is gone. Still, he wants to continue the dreams they had discussed, no matter how impossible they might be.
When Harley shows up on his doorstep, Miko is shocked to learn that he’s alive. Miko just doesn’t know if the life he created will be enough to keep the man home and happy.
When trouble starts, Harley and Miko have to put aside their differences and learn to work as a team or the people bent on keeping them apart permanently just might get their wish. With the help of some friends, they just might have the chance to keep their little family together.

STORY EXCERPT
"I think this is it."
Harland 'Harley' Thomas fingered the long scar running down his cheek as he looked over to where his driver and friend, Manny, was pointing. His heart pounded a little faster as he glanced at the driveway. He couldn't help but chuckle when he read the ranch sign hanging over the driveway.
Crazy Acres
That sounded just about right.
He couldn't see anything of the place beyond the sign as trees lined both sides of the driveway for as far as the eye could see. Harley nodded to Manny and the SUV slowly turned onto the driveway.
"Damn!" Manny said as they drove past the tree line and the view opened to show a majestic sight. He gave a low whistle as his eyes darted over the land. "This is pretty nice, man."
Harley couldn't agree more. It was just as he had imagined, maybe even better. Fencing lined both sides of the driveway all of the way up to the house. The field on the passenger side of the vehicle was empty but the field on the driver's side had several horses grazing in it, looking as if they didn’t have a care in the world.
Beyond the house and fenced in pastures, the entire place was surrounded by tree covered hills, like the little valley the ranch sat in was created just for it. The driveway came to an end in a round circle right in front of a large log cabin. Situated right inside of the circular drive was a large oak tree with grass growing around it.
Manny brought the SUV to a stop right in front of the house. "Do you want me to go in with you?" he asked as he cut the engine and turned to look at Harley.
Harley grinned as he looked at Manny, and then into the backseat where Bill and his lover Angelo were seated. He shook his head. "No, I have this."
Harley opened the door and swung his legs down to the ground. His feet hit the paved driveway and he grimaced when he had to reach back in for his cane. He would have preferred doing this without a cane but if he wanted to walk, he had to carry the damn thing with him.
As he headed toward the house, Harley’s eyes gazed over the place, taking in the vision he had dreamt about. It looked exactly like it had in his dreams, right down to the wraparound porch and the large front windows. He hoped the inside looked just as he had seen it in his head as well.
Using his cane, Harley slowly made his way up the steps to the front door. He took a moment to look around, seeing the hard work that had gone into building the place. Besides the fenced pastures and the house, there was a barn set just beyond the driveway. It was all so picturesque.
And perfect.
Before lifting his hand and knocking on the door, Harley drew in a fortifying breath and then slowly blew it out. This was it. The next few seconds could make or break him and he knew it. He had been through a nightmarish hell, and lived for only one single reason. With any luck, that reason was about to be his reward for staying alive.
Harley's heart felt like it was climbing into his throat and squeezing the very breath from him when he heard a soft musical voice from inside the house and then the door slowly opened. His breath froze in his lungs and he found it hard to breathe when his saw a long cascade of black hair and the soul deep caramel-brown eyes that blinked up at him through the screen door.
Harley had to literally make himself start breathing again. The vision was so breathtaking that all he wanted to do was just stand there and admire the man.
"Hello, Mitsuaki," he whispered in a voice that sounded echoed and seemed to come from far away.
"Harley-chan?" There was a slight tinge of wonder in Miko's voice, the magical lilt pulling Harley in deeper. "You alive, Harley-chan?"
Harley felt tears clog his throat but he managed a tremulous smile despite them. "I'm alive, Miko." Barely, but now wasn't the time to think about that. Harley would rather think about the beauty standing before him. He had pretty much been thinking of nothing else for months.
Miko had haunted Harley's dreams, awake or asleep like a vision that wrapped itself around him and brought him comfort in a time when he needed it most. He was pretty sure the gorgeous man was the only reason he was alive and standing on the front porch of a house he had only fantasized about instead of dead in some drug lord’s crazy clutches in Central America.
The screen door slowly pushed open and Miko stumbled out, staring up at Harley like he was seeing a ghost—like he wasn’t real or tangible. Miko's hand trembled as he reached up and pressed the lightest of touches against the side of Harley's face, his fingers as smooth as silk and as warm as the summer sun.
"You alive, Harley-chan!"

ADULT EXCERPT
Harley felt the uneven rhythm of Miko's breathing and knew his lover was just as affected by their closeness as he was. He trailed his finger over Miko’s silken skin, circling his bellybutton before moving further up his chest. He might not be able to see where his fingers were going but he could see the response to his touch in the slow tenting in Miko’s boxers.
“You like it when I touch you, don’t you, Miko?”
“Hai,” Miko groaned. “Yes.”
“You missed my touch,” Harley murmured as he brushed his fingers over Miko’s taut nipples. The anxious whine that fell from Miko’s lips was the man’s only response. Harley felt a ripple of excitement roll through him at the needy little sound. “I missed touching you, Miko.”
God, he had missed touching his lover. Miko’s body was built to be made love to. His slim frame fit perfectly into Harley’s arms. His soft skin and delicate bones were in such deep contrast to Harley’s hard toned body that it was almost awe inspiring to look at.
Miko cried out and arched, pushing into Harley’s hand when he rolled one hard pebbled nipple between his fingers. Harley’s mouth went dry at the sight. Miko had always been so damn responsive to his touch, and knowing that he was the only man to ever see Miko’s pleasure made it even more special.
Harley reached down and grabbed the hem of Miko’s t-shirt and pulled it up. Miko lifted his arms and Harley pulled the cotton shirt off, tossing it off the side of the bed. Harley brushed his hands down over Miko’s chest again, pushing them down to the edge of Miko’s boxers.
When the man offered no protest, Harley pushed the waistband of the boxers down, freeing Miko’s thick erection. It bounced up and slapped against Miko’s abdomen, leaving a trail of pre-cum against Miko’s skin.
Hunger spiraled through Harley at the sight of the hardened flesh. Miko’s cock was perfect in his eyes—not too small and not too large, not too thin and not too thick. It was perfect, just like Miko.
Harley heard Miko’s breathing hitch when he wrapped his hand around him. Harley smiled and blew a breath of air against Miko’s ear. “Do you like that, baby?” he asked as he gave the thick shaft one long stroke with his hand.
“Hai!”
There was a glint of wonder in Miko’s eyes as he looked up at Harley. It was too much for Harley to resist. He fisted his hand in Miko’s hair and brought their mouths together, devouring Miko’s lips with all of the pent up hunger he had been feeling for the last two years.
At the same time, he stroked Miko’s cock, tightening his fingers then loosening them, drawing out the pleasure as long as he could. The little needy noises Miko started making drowned out the thundering of Harley’s heart.
Harley slid his hand down to Miko’s abdomen and pulled the man back into the apex of his thighs as far as he would go. It pushed Miko’s back right up against him, trapping Harley’s hard, aching cock between them.
“My sweet baby,” Harley whispered against Miko’s lips, knowing that his lover liked to hear him talk when they were alone like this. It was one of the few times when Miko felt he could be open and free with what he was feeling. “So beautiful and all mine.”
“Hai, Harley-chan,” Miko whimpered. “All yours, just yours.”
Music to my ears.
“Come for me, Miko,” Harley demanded as he sped up the movement of his hand. The wiggling of Miko’s body against his cock was pushing him closer to his own release and he wanted to watch Miko come before that happened. He needed it. “Show me how much you want me, baby.”
A knot rose in Harley’s throat when Miko cried out and arched up. Miko’s hips thrust up, driving his cock into Harley’s hand. Ropes of pearly white cum shot from his cock and splattered over Harley’s hand and Miko’s abdomen.
“Damn, baby,” Harley whispered as a hot ache grew in his throat. He leaned back against the pillows so that he could reach down and palm his own aching cock but before he could, Miko flipped around and swallowed him down to the root. “Miko!”
Harley’s eyes rolled back into his head as intense pleasure swamped every nerve in his body. Harley knew it had been a long time but he came almost embarrassingly fast. One long lick of Miko’s tongue and a deep swallow and Harley was shouting out his release, pumping shot after shot of cum into his lover’s mouth.
Harley closed his eyes as he collapsed back against the pillows, panting heavily. He felt Miko move up to stretch out beside him, and felt the tentative touch of the man’s delicate fingers on his chest.
“You okay, Harley-chan?”
Harley smiled as he opened his eyes to stare up at Miko. “I’m perfect, baby.”
“Not…” Miko’s worried eyes roamed over Harley’s body. “Not too much?”
“No, love, it was just right.” Harley glanced around then laughed. “But a washcloth would be a good idea,” he said as he held up his cum covered hand.
“I get.” Miko bounced off the bed and ran to the bathroom. He was back a moment later with a clean washcloth. Miko hurriedly wiped them both down then took the washcloth back to the bathroom. The bed bounced again when Miko came back and climbed on.
Harley held out his arm, letting out a deep sigh as a peace he hadn’t felt in months entered his soul as Miko curled into his side. Miko’s head rested on Harley’s chest, his finger gently stroking his skin. Harley wrapped his arms around Miko and held him close, stroking his hand up and down Miko’s smooth back.

“It’s okay. I get it. You want to fuck me.” Richard raised a brow. “Does that line always work for you?”

Julian grinned sheepishly and nodded. “But, Jesus, I can’t believe I said that to you. I was sorry afterward. Afraid you’d blow me off.”

“Interesting choice of words.”

Julian started worrying his lip again.

Watching him, Richard wanted to moan. “Julian?”

His eyes locked on Richard’s.

“I think you better kiss me before you chew your lip off.”

Julian stepped in. The kiss was surprisingly gentle when it landed on Richard’s mouth. Julian’s lips were warm and sweet and slightly rough where he’d been biting on them. They caressed more than kissed. The touch of lips sent shock waves through Richard’s body, and he responded by deepening the kiss—slipping his tongue between Julian’s lips, moaning into his mouth when Julian sucked on it.

Julian’s hands explored Richard’s shoulders and back. They followed every plane and muscle of Richard’s body. Even through his clothes, Julian’s touch sent him spiraling out of control.

If only I could feel those hands on my bare skin.

Richard rubbed his hips against Julian’s. Their fabric-covered cocks made contact, and Julian moaned. He could tell Julian really wanted this. So did he.

What the hell is he doing to me?

Finally they broke for air. Panting, Julian rested his forehead on Richard’s. “Wow.” The word turned into another kiss as he slipped his hands inside Richard’s jacket and pushed him back against the car. At six feet one inch, Richard was tall, but Julian was taller and heavier. The bigger man pinned him with his body, and Richard’s hands came up to tangle in Julian’s dark hair. Julian trailed kisses along his jaw, and then his hot, wet mouth opened on Richard’s neck, licking and sucking. Amazed at how quickly he gave up control to this man, Richard tilted his head to give him better access. It wasn’t enough. Moaning, he tugged on Julian’s hair.

“What do you want, Julian?” Richard whispered.

“You, this, us…” Julian’s voice was husky with need. “Been thinking about it so long.”

“Thinking about what? How did you picture us?”

“Oh, God.” Julian nipped at his neck.

“Tell me.”
“You. On your knees. Your lips wrapped around my cock. Sucking…” The big man shivered.

Suddenly, Richard realized he wanted the same thing. An image of himself in the submissive position with Julian’s cock in his mouth made Richard’s chest tighten with anticipation. He’d never believed submitting to be a sign of weakness. On the contrary it had always been a sign of strength, of being secure enough to allow another man to take control. In the past that other man had been Tony, and Richard had trusted him completely. Together they had explored things that Richard had only dreamed of. Tony had given him the strength to be himself and the courage to make his fantasies a reality. Without Tony there would be no Gentlemen’s Club.

Can I trust Julian?

Happy Reading!

STORY EXCERPT

“Hey! Have you seen him?” Nicole asked, sliding into the leather bucket chair. A rich, fragrant gust of Chanel No. 5 blew between them.
“He’s in my Intro to Lit class,” Mattie told her. She bit into her Nutri-Grain bar, pushing a bag of pretzels toward Nicole.
“He’s back from Pennsylvania.” Nicole popped a few sourdough nuggets into her mouth. “He’s living with his father again.” She crunched around her words. “I wonder what happened. I’d figured we’d seen the last of him after graduation.” Nicole shrugged, rolling her heavily made-up eyes. “Did you know he’s half-Brazilian?” Her dark brows lifted. “I never knew that.” Nicole stared at her, tongue in cheek. “That’s where those looks come from. I always wondered.” Her brows waggled. “He’s not my type, though.”
Mattie laughed and just listened. She didn’t want to interrupt Nicole’s flow. Mattie’s unspoken question was answered in the next informative breath.
“Maybe I’ll invite him to the party, a sort of welcome back, you know.” Nicole’s eyes flashed. She always had a plan. Her mind never fell short when it came to spinning an elaborate web, though this one didn’t seem to really benefit her.
“So”—Nicole’s hands rotated through the air—“did you talk to him?” Nicole’s mouth tipped into her famous seductive smirk, her wine-colored lipstick settling in the cracks of her lips.
“No. I just scoped him out.”
“Ah, come on, Mattie.” Nicole nudged her hand across the table. “Reacquaint yourself. Come to think of it—”
Mattie cut her off. “I can handle it, if there’s anything to handle, thank you.” Mattie waited, thinking Nicole might be trying to sell her the benefits of an exclusive relationship. Nicole and Cody had been together for years, since junior high. Now that they were all in their early twenties, it seemed as if Cody was Nicole’s “forever man.” Cody was a mechanic downtown. Nicole’s parents weren’t happy with the fact that Cody had been around this long. They’d hoped for a more polished man for their daughter, but after Nicole’s parents accepted that their daughter wasn’t going to heed their advice, they let the issue die.
Nicole’s parents immersed themselves in their jobs and their money, giving Nicole whatever she wanted so there was no friction. They were white-collar workers who commuted to New York and often stayed at their condo in Manhattan during the week, leaving Nicole alone to run things as she saw fit.
“Have you heard from our valedictorian?” Sometimes Nicole was just a bit too candid and sarcastic.
“Not since she went back to school, no.” Mattie leaned on the table, inhaling the smell of grease, suddenly craving a cup of fries from the café. The line was thinning out. While debating whether to ingest the additional three hundred calories, Nicole nudged her leg.
“There he is.” She turned, watching Seth stroll out of the café with a pretzel dotted with gobs of mustard in his hand. He had a brown, suede backpack hanging off his shoulder. “Just look at the heads turn.” Nicole’s wide eyes flashed back at her.
“It’s the hair,” Mattie muttered. “It’s got everyone in an uproar. It did get long.”
Nicole faced her, raking the stiff, black strands of her own hair out of her eyes. “Gotta go. See you.” Nicole darted across the lounge, her pencil-thin legs skirting through the crowd, disappearing through the double doors.
Mattie opted out of getting the fries, picked up her tote bag, and went outside. The campus had an outdoor eating area. In the spring it was always busy, but on a raw day like today, she could be by herself, which was what she wanted.
College had turned into a big disappointment. Mattie just wanted to stop this mundane nonsense and start her life. What that entailed she wasn’t sure. She sat down at the table, the cold wood seeping through her jeans. A frigid wind blew, poking her cheeks like millions of frozen needles. When she thought about what type of job she’d like, it was always bittersweet. Her thoughts would always lead back to her mother, numbing her insides as if injected with Novocain. By the time her mother finally got the confidence to try her hand at running a business and run with her talent, a tragic car accident had taken her life.
The void Mattie was nursing was only thirteen months old. She reached into her pocket, fingering the wishing stone her mother had given her. It was a pale-blue stone with white, crystalized rings swirled through it. The whole point of the rock being called a “wishing stone” was that the rings, of course, were a series of closed shapes and they were all intertwined. No ring or circle stood alone. When one wanted to make a wish, they were supposed to hold the stone and caress it with their fingers.
She took the stone out and stared at it, running her thumb across its smooth surface. She silently voiced her wish. Mattie hoped that she had the opportunity to maybe talk with Seth. Though they never hung out with the same crowd when they were younger, a new social outlet might be nice. He did sit right in front of her. Something was definitely missing. She knew the empty space that her mother had left behind could never be filled with anything else, but there was another space, a void that was growing, consuming her with an ache that had her body feeling dormant and lifeless. It was a feeling Mattie didn’t think a twenty-one-year-old woman should have.

ADULT EXCERPT

Seth dropped to his knees and opened her jeans, his appetite for her overwhelming. Matching panties lay behind the zipper as the teeth separated. He traced a thumb over her clothed clit. Her arousal seeped through the silk, raising his need to a whole new level. Seth eased the panties and denim down her legs, freeing her of her boots and clothing. He glanced up at her over the expanse of her creamy flesh. Mattie’s head was still tipped to the ceiling, her breaths rushing.
When his fingers threaded slowly through the creases of her pussy, she cried out to him, “Oh, oh God.”
“Are you sensitive?” His voice was heated.
“It’s been so long,” she whispered.
“You’re in good hands.” Seth kissed the sandy curls that covered her dewy creases. She smelled sweet, with a slight tang that had him swallowing hard. He separated her folds. Seth slowly licked her clitoris, wanting to be tender and gentle.
“Yes,” she breathed. Mattie widened her stance, his technique pleasing. She leaned back on the edge of his nightstand, arching for him.
“You like that?” Seth licked her again slowly, wanting to arouse, yet pacify. Her honeyed essence exploded on his tongue. “You’re opening right up for me. You’re so beautiful.” Seth burrowed through her again, his tongue dipping deep into her wet, thermal center. “Mm,” he moaned. He sucked in her liquid heat, drenching his tongue with her.
Seth unbuttoned his jeans and pushed his briefs and jeans down. He yanked out his cock and stroked himself. He had both his hand and his mouth in sync now, wanting the rhythm to be perfect. Mattie’s faint moans drifted through the air above him, sounding like an erotic symphony. She was a long, silky trail of smooth skin. He rested his hands on the back of her legs, her curves firm and toned. Her heat surrounded him, feeding his frenzy as he licked the soft insides of her pussy, relishing the delicate tissues, her fragrance and taste. His balls were as tight as a beanbag, his cock an aching rod that needed to let loose and fire. She was sedating him, spurring him on. Everything slowed, his eyes hazy. He pulled away, high from the experience, and stood.
Her heavy-lidded eyes were dangerous, burning holes right through him. Seth sat on the edge of the bed and pulled his jeans the rest of the way off. He met her fiery gaze as he rose to his feet. Her suggestive words rocked his insides.
“I can’t wait for you to fuck me,” she whispered.
“Have I unleashed a lioness?” Seth asked. His lips curved into a lazy grin. “If so…then please, allow me.”

* * * *

He’d turned her into a madwoman. It’d been so long, too long since she’d felt a guy inside her, thrusting, pushing, his mouth licking and kissing. Seth had her strung out.
“Should I set the pace?” Seth stalked her like a panther, circling around her. His nakedness was magnificent. He was tall, lean. His tawny flesh stretched over his limbs with a trace of pleasing muscle looking as smooth as paper. His cock was as trim as he was, sprouting from a small patch of black hair. It bobbed in his palm as he stroked himself. Mattie’s mouth dried, her heart racing at the display.
“Make your presence known.” Her tone hardened with impatience. Seth grabbed her upper arm. Mattie thrived on the thrill, the excitement of having him building. He pressed her up against the wall. His long fingers gripped her chin as his mouth took hers. Their teeth hit. He bit her lip. She shuddered at his desperate need. Both his hands slid under her ass, lifting her off her feet, his movements rushed. Her instincts kicked in. Her legs wrapped around him, latching on for the ride. Seth’s cock pushed inside her. His body rammed into hers, knocking them both into the wall. Her body opened, accommodating him. His hair grazed her face. Mattie bit the strands, sucking on them. His gravelly voice bellowed in her ear.
“I’m fucking smitten already.”
His pleasure broke through her like water flooding into a dry tributary. She absorbed him, her parched bones consuming him. Seth pressed into her deeply, his hands gripping her ass. His body stilled. Tendons twitched under her hands as his body worked to pleasure hers.
“How I’ve waited for this.” His brow creased in concentration. “Fuck, it’s so good.” He pulled out slowly, then thrust back into her, the force of their pent-up passions taking them away to parts unknown. Mattie gripped his shoulders, raking her hands down the smooth panes of his back, scratching, digging, wanting to keep whatever she found. Seth’s harsh whisper tunneled into her ear.
“I’m gonna come. You’ve got me so hot,” he said, his breath heaving. His forbidden scent rose between them. Mattie pulled in a rush of air. She could feel his body. His dick flexed inside her, pulsating, raining on her insides with his release. Her clit slid against the slick dampness of his cock. She was almost there, her orgasm hovering. She reached between them, not wanting to miss this ride with him.
“Yeah, baby, touch it, make it fire.”

Excerpt From: Testing Arthur

"Are you sure I can’t do anything else for you?" Addison Stark asked.
Arthur bit back the acid words threatening to spill out of his mouth. He needed peace, quiet and no more chattering in his ear. Addison hadn’t shut the fuck up for days.
"No, I’ve got it from here. Thanks for the ride." As much as he appreciated his friend’s help, Addie had become too possessive over the past few days. Unexpectedly showing up at the hospital, harassing the staff about Arthur’s care—the man had been relentless. Arthur almost regretted agreeing to let Addie drive him home after his surgery. Addie had mentioned several times how he’d be happy to stay and take care of Arthur while he recovered. It had taken a lot of lying out of his ass to convince Addie that Arthur’s brother, Callum, would be along soon to take care of him.
Callum would be surprised to hear the news too since he didn’t even know Arthur had been injured. Arthur might have bent the truth until it screamed, but his instincts told him to keep Addie at a distance.
"You can set my bag over there." Arthur nodded towards a spot on the entryway tile. Addie didn’t need to come any farther inside. If Arthur offered him coffee or anything, he’d never leave.
The slim redhead gave Arthur an odd look but set his bag down. "How long do you need to be on those crutches?"
"A couple of weeks to keep the weight off the leg so the wound will heal. I can hobble around on my own after that. I was lucky—no major nerves were severed and he missed the artery." Arthur tried to remember that luck while nightmares played in his head every night. The memory of his partner scattered about their motel room in bloody, oozing chunks remained vivid in his mind.
"Poor Dwayne can’t say the same thing," Addie said. The words were right, but the tone lacked emotion. Horror should’ve been in his voice like it lived in Arthur’s mind. A psychopath had sliced Dwayne’s body to pieces. No one deserved that kind of death, even a screaming homophobe like Dwayne. He knew Addie hadn’t liked Arthur’s partner, but surely there should be some sympathy for the dead?
"Did you go to the ceremony?" Arthur asked.
Addie nodded.
"I’m sorry I missed it. I had wanted to be there for Lisa and Destiny." They’d still been stitching him back together when they’d laid Dwayne to rest. It had spared Arthur the burden of pretending to be broken up over losing his partner, but he would’ve liked to have helped Lisa through the ordeal. His partner had been a tool, but Arthur had always liked Dwayne’s wife and daughter.
"It was a nice ceremony. Lisa doesn’t blame you for his death." Addie dropped that bombshell casually as if it didn’t have the weight to affect the rest of his life.
"She doesn’t?" A pound of guilt slid off of Arthur’s chest—the burden he’d been carrying since he found his partner butchered under the knife of a serial killer. "But I would’ve been there to save Dwayne if I hadn’t gone to meet you."
The fact that he’d returned too late to save his partner weighed on his conscience. If he’d arrived only a few minutes earlier, Dwayne might still be alive.
Addie nodded. "Yeah. Did you ever figure out how he found your motel room?"
"No." It bothered Arthur, that little tingling fact being out of place. He knew he hadn’t been followed and Dwayne hadn’t taken the car anywhere without him. It was almost like the killer had had an inside track on their whereabouts. Arthur pushed that thought away. No one would help a psychopath kill an agent, at least not anyone who had known where Dwayne and Arthur were staying.
"If you’d returned later than you did, you wouldn’t have caught him and he’d still be out there carving up who knows who."
Arthur knew Addie was trying to make him feel better but somehow it didn’t. Pretty four-year-old Destiny with her big brown eyes and corkscrew curls didn’t have a daddy anymore because Arthur had sat down and eaten an eggroll with Addie before he left their meeting. Dwayne might have been a bigoted idiot, but he’d been a caring father and husband.
"But if I’d been there earlier I might have been able to stop him," Arthur protested. His nightmares were filled with the image of his dead partner strewn in pieces across their motel room floor. The patterns of the blood alone remained vivid in his mind like bloody watercolours across his memory. He’d been to war zones that had had less blood than that one crime scene.
He shook his head as if that could dispel the brutal images burned into his mind.

Skye sat with her hands fisted in her shirttails so she wouldn’t throttle her well-meaning yet clueless Aunt Mary. The smoking cauldron on the stove erupted into another hiss, and the smell made her stomach curdle.
Aunt Mary muttered to herself as she gathered the necessary ingredients for the love spell from various places in the ancient farmhouse.
Skye tried not to cringe when her aunt walked too close to a knife sitting on the edge of the table. Clearing her throat, Skye mustered enough courage to ask, “Is this thing supposed to be turning black and smelling like rotten eggs?”
“Oh my, yes, dearie,” Aunt Mary said as she bustled around the kitchen.
Skye blew out a deep breath and tried to keep calm as she watched her aunt stir something that looked suspiciously like toad legs in the cauldron. Yuck. I swear, some days it’s almost too much to bear, with Mary’s new found interest in New Age-isms and spells that do everything but what they’re supposed to. Skye looked at the clock and sighed, knowing she wasn’t going to get on the road back to Dayton any sooner than when her aunt deemed it necessary.
Skye tried not to feel dejected, but that wasn’t easy after her disastrous Valentine date. The whole time, her date had just talked and talked about his life and career. She felt lost on the planes of life. With each day going by, it was almost too much to bear as she watched friends and family fall for their true loves. This latest strategy was extreme, to her thinking, but her aunt was determined to get the sparkle back in her eyes, or so she said the first night she was here. It was enough to make Skye cringe in horror, but she couldn’t say anything mean to the one person who loved her more than anything. Flipping her hair off her face, she breathed a sigh of relief as she watched her aunt finish whatever she was doing to the brew. Then Mary turned around with a bottle of the foul-smelling stuff.
“Here you go, dear. All finished and ready for you to imbibe! All you need to do is say three times, “I wish for my true love to find me,” and then within seven days, according to the spell book I got from a used book store, your true love will find you and steal your heart away.” Aunt Mary gazed fondly at Skye, who was trying to look happy but failing to hide the sadness in her eyes.
Skye took the bottle and peered at it, grimacing. It was blackish-blue in color, with something that looked like lightning bugs shining in it, winking here and there. For a moment it was like watching a kaleidoscope of colors, enough to make her eyes cross.
Uncorking the bottle, Skye tried to shield her expression from Mary, but a shudder ran through her. Again she thought of the men who got away or chose someone else and firmed her resolve to find a love of her own. A pleasant licorice scent wafted from the brew, and though Skye was skeptical, she had to admit it smelled better than it looked. Muttering, “Let’s hope it tastes as pleasant as it smells or I am going to throw up chunks,” Skye leaned back and gulped the liquid. As she finished the last drop, she put down the bottle and recited the words her aunt told her to say:
“I wish for my true love to find me.”
“I wish for my true love to find me.”
“I wish for my true love to find me.”
Skye turned to the window and prayed this drink didn’t make her sick when she caught a glimpse of a face looking at her. It was enough to cause her to gasp quietly and take a step back. Those moss-green eyes seemed to call to her, longing for something, and Skye had to wonder if she was losing her mind. She looked away, thinking it was a figment of her imagination, but the face still stared at her. Those chiseled cheeks and full, round lips made her long to feel them over her own, and those cheekbones would give a model envy. Skye felt her body take notice, and her panties got moist with her racing desire. Soon the face faded, though it felt like time stopped and only Skye could see what was there. Shaking her head, she said, “It was nothing. Just a figment of your imagination or a trick with the light. He isn’t real at all.”
But why does my heart and mind tell me otherwise? Is he The One I’ve been searching for? Skye wondered as she got ready to leave for home.
