Excerpt:

Mel got into his uncle's car and drove back home, the stone in his pocket. He left the car in the parking lot and ran off down the street to the park. Then he saw Darien. He was standing there across the street, looking at him. This wasn't good. This wasn't good at all. He clutched the stone. "Brennus," he said aloud, "come to me."

Nothing.

This had better work. "Brennus, I command you, come to me now."

Darien had started across the street in his direction. "I want to talk to you," he called out.

Mel began to run, but he knew he couldn't outrun Darien. "I know what you are," he cried out, looking behind him. Suddenly Darien was there, standing directly in front of him.

"Really? What am I?" His eyes looked really strange.

The moon grinned down on them. This guy, Mel, looked nervously at the sky. "Brennus," he muttered. "I command you. Please, come to me. I command you, Goddamnit."

"Brennus?" Darien raised an eyebrow, his dark head tilting. "Why did you call to…oh," he said. "Oh no, you little worm. It's not Brennus you summoned with that stone. I'll--"

"Brennus!" Mel stumbled back.

Suddenly, Brennus appeared, just like that. He came out of the sky and touched down on the grass. Brennus faced Mel, waiting.

Mel gave Darien an arrogant glance and backed away. He smiled. "He's mine now."

Darien whirled on Brennus. "Brennus, what is wrong with you? Damn it, Brennus, this can't be happening. It's me! Snap out of it."

Brennus still stared at Mel, waiting.

"Look," Darien snapped, glaring at the mortal, baring his teeth, "if this is some sort of a spell, I can easily break it by killing you, so if you want to die…"

"Brennus," Mel said with a triumphant smile, "destroy Darien."

Darien was not prepared for the rage or for Brennus's strength. He was down almost immediately. Brennus seemed determined that he wouldn't be getting back up ever again.

"Brennus, listen to reason!" Darien pleaded. Brennus didn't even seem to know him. His teeth tore at his flesh savagely and Darien knew if some miracle didn't happen soon, he was a goner. If Brennus bit him, he'd drain him dry.
