It was a hot night in early June, 2000, a good year for professional wrestling. As they arrived, one of the company’s hottest young tag teams, Kerry ‘Sunshine’ Sutton and Lomian Sanders, commonly known as Vernal Equinox, were involved in an argument.

The Southern Cross Wrestling Federation put on four shows a month at the Cross Coliseum in Mobile, Alabama, and ten times a year, in every month except January and July, they had an extra special Sunday show. They maintained a roster of more than thirty wrestlers, and had a full staff of backstage crewmembers as well. The wrestling academy was directly behind the coliseum. Every day, an active swarm of students arrived to study and practice the art of professional wrestling, taught by patriarch Radford Cross, his two nephews, and a handful of other seasoned trainers.

Their sister federation in Mexico had recently proposed some trades, so SCWF would be temporarily hosting a few new faces. Five of their own wrestlers had been chosen to work in Mexico City, and all were enthusiastic about the new culture experience. Everyone loved wrestling in Mexico, where the sport tended to be looked upon as a religion rather than a mere spectacle.

One of the men who had been slated to leave was Robert Louis Cross, aka Bobby Louie Bravado, and since he was the current, long-time heavyweight champion, it was necessary for him to drop the title belt before he departed. It happened at the big pay-per-view show on Sunday night, a production dubbed “Challenge of the Champions”, in which every belt was on the line.

Bobby lost his title to Chad Baker. The tag team belts were retained by the Sampson twins and the middleweight belt remained in the possession of Nico Rameriz. The women’s championship belt did not change hands, but stayed securely around the waist of the lovely and daring Gracie ‘OMG’ Hamilton, who had held her reign for over half a year. She was the most extreme woman wrestler any of them had ever met, surpassing all her male counterparts in skills and in raw nerve.

Vernal Equinox did not have a title match. Theirs was the dark match at the beginning of the show against Micah and Danny Trinket. The Trinkets were victorious.

The most memorable scuffle of the night was not in the ring, but happened backstage and away from the eye of the camera.
